History

Eden Garden Stadium also known as Lord’s of Asia’s Stadiums is one of the oldest stadiums in India. Initially, it was named “Auckland Circus Garden”. Auckland was Governor-General of India at that time(1836-1842). Then in 1841, these more than 50 acres of land were named after his sisters called Fanny and Emily Eden. Eventually, it known as Eden Gardens. It was located between Fort William and Babughat. 

Later in 1911, Kolkata Cricket and football club hold the reins and established it as a cricket ground.

The architecture of this glorious stadium is a depiction of not only rich Indian culture but also its old history. It is a blend of contemporary and time-honored architecture making it a prime spot for enamored spectators. It also showcases British folklore. 

Renovations:

This stadium has undergone several renovations because many national and international games have been played here.

In 1987, it was renovated, and its seating capacity had been expanded to 40,000 for World Cup. To grant support to its roof, 42 columns had been added along with multi-dimensional covered stands.

For Cricket World Cup 2011, it was renovated to align with criteria set by International Cricket Council(ICC). Renovations included new metal roof structure, a new clubhouse, padded seating, privileged stands and enclosures, refinement of perimeter walls, and many infrastructure renewals for both players and spectators.
