History

In 1731, the Military of Ireland and the Gentleman of Ireland played the 1st mention of modern cricket in Ireland in one of the oldest established cricket clubs. While the origin of cricket from Ireland comes from the old Gaelic game ‘Katty’.

In 1923, the first outward appearance of association arrived with the establishment of the Irish Cricket Union with the formation of the national squad, primarily organizing fittings against the Scots and English MCC, with infrequent visits by Test Teams and English Counties.

Irish cricket made its big breakthrough in 2007 by winning the World Cup against Pakistan and Bangladesh and achieving world attention. This team was ranked 10th in the world, and it was the first time an associate outranked a Test-playing country.

In July 2009, Ireland won their third European title when they hosted Division One of the European championships and won every game. This team also hosted five other associate nations in early August at the ICC World T20 Qualifier in Belfast.
