Lahore Qalandars

Lahore Qalandars is a competent cricket franchise representing Pakistan’s most significant Metropolitan City, Lahore. Moreover, this team significantly symbolizes the passion for cricket of the people of Lahore.

Gaddafi Stadium is the home ground for the team. The team simultaneously runs a program named “Jazz Rising Stars” to find young and local talent across the eight cities of Pakistan.

Surprisingly, the team was the second-most premium franchise among the few teams sold to an international organization. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t perform well in the starting four seasons of the PSL, with bottom positions in the points table. Later, in the 2020 edition, the team made a spectacular comeback by securing a place in the final. Additionally, the team clamped the champions title in the consecutive seasons of 2022 and 2023.

Franchise History

In December 2015, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) disclosed the owners of five franchises for the inaugural season of PSL. Following this announcement, PCB also confirmed the initial season dates in February 2016 in the UAE.

Fawad Rana bought the Lahore Qalandars for a ten-year contract for 25.1 million US dollars. Ultimately making it the second-priciest team after Karachi Kings sold for 26 million US dollars.

Additionally, under the Players Development Program (PDP), this franchise set up “Jazz Rising Stars” trials in 2016. The ultimate purpose of these trials was to discover the raw talent and to refine it. The shortlisted players were sent to Australia and get training with Sydney Thunder. Ultimately, the shortlisted top performers would get to perform for the Qalandars.

Undoubtedly, Aqib Javed unleashed the incredible fast bowler Yasir Jan from Rawalpindi. Fakhar Zaman is also an illustrious fast bowler joining the Qalandars with Jazz Rising Stars.

Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings’ Rivalry

The Qalandars have a gigantic rivalry with the Karachi Kings and is known to be the most substantial rivalry in the PSL. Subsequently, the cultural and economic disparities contribute to the Karachi and Lahore conflict.

Overall, as of the 2023 PSL season, both teams played 19 matches. Out of 19 matches, Karachi Kings were victorious ten times, and Lahore only won 9 times. Both teams have an immense fan following, which makes their matches more thrilling and exciting. Besides, both teams are considered the Most Expensive Teams of PSL.

Karachi Kings Rivalry

Additionally, the Qalandars have a provincial conflict with the second team, Multan Sultans. The matches played between the two are called “The Punjab Derby.”

Team Identity

Rana Fawad launched the Qalandars on December 12, 2015. Additionally, Qalandars is a term to describe saints and Sufi mystics who devoted their lives to Islam. The shrines of these saints and mystics attract millions of devotees and tourists. Moreover, Lahore is enriched with this Sufi culture. Hence, the term Qalandars was added to the name to highlight the cultural norms and values of Lahore. The “Q” in Qalandars also represents the QALCO and Qatar.

The team’s logo features a saint performing the cultural Sufi Dance to signify the Sufi culture of the city. Moreover, there is a cricket ball at the base and stumps at the right of the logo.

In the first season of the PSL, the team’s kit colours were red and black. Later, in the second season, Qalandaars substituted the red with the green.

Initial sponsors of the shirt and title were Mobilink and Al-Karam. The media partner of the Qalandars is Geo TV, and the team’s hospitality sponsor is Royal Palm. Millat Sports, a top sportswear brand, is the team’s kit manufacturer.
