Construction and Renovation

It was constructed by the Gujrat government in 1982 when a total of 50 acres of land was donated by the government on the banks of the Sabarmati River. This huge cricket ground was constructed in a time span of 9 months only. At that time, it had a seating capacity of only 54,000. Then, later in October 2015, the stadium was demolished and reconstructed to be the world’s largest cricket stadium, one of its type. This renovation was planned by the Gujrat Cricket Association President and Chief Minister of that time, Narendra Modi. It took many years and a budget of around 800 crore INR ($100 million), and was completed in February 2020. The renovated stadium building occupies around 63 acres of land.

Perks of This Stadium

Let’s discuss the specialties of this beautiful stadium!

The stadium’s overall area is comparable to 32 soccer fields of Olympic dimensions put together. This massive structure has four dressing rooms, three practicing grounds with club facilities, seventy-six air-conditioned corporate boxes having a seating capacity of 25 spectators, an indoor cricket academy with a dormitory to place 40 athletes, and a swimming pool of Olympic standards.

With a purposefully spherical, open stadium that offers 360-degree views, every fan has unobstructed perspectives of the field and pitch, ensuring that they feel like a part of the action. It has 21 entry points to for easy in.

The Canopy

The roof canopy structure was designed in such a way that it stands pillar-less, providing a clear non-obstructed view to the cricket fans. It also has LED instead of regular flood lights, for a better lighting experience. The lotus-shaped design of the roof is a mark of architectural brilliance as well as a symbol of elegance.

The Field and The Pitch

The field size of this stadium is 180×150 yards. It is the first stadium in the world that has 11 clay pitches on the main ground; six of them are made with red soil while the rest of the five are made of black soil. The main pitch, when made new, was a pretty fast pitch. But, with the passage of time, it lost its spice and became a slow pitch. Most test matches played here ended up with a tie.
