Newlands Cricket Ground

Newlands Cricket Ground is located in Cape Town and is called “Six Gun Grill Newlands” due to sponsorship reasons. The stadium is home to the South Africa Cricket Team, Cape Cobras, Cape Town Blitz, and MI Cape Town. Additionally, every format of the game is played here. Being surrounded by Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak, the stadium is considered one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the entire globe. The former rugby union and football arena famous as “Newlands Stadium” is close to the cricket ground. To build office block development as a part of the stadium, it was revealed in March 2019 that the Western Province Cricket Association, the proprietors of Newlands Cricket Stadium, had partnered with Sanlam. However, the cricket ground still operates under the Western Province Cricket Association.

Newlands Cricket Stadium

Official Name

In October 2020, the ground was named “Six Gun Grill Newlands” due to the partnership. The stadium was previously known as “PPC Newlands” after a cement company, “Sahara Park Newlands” when the computer company assumed ownership, and “Liberty Life Newlands” after an insurance company.

In 1845, the land was granted to Jacob Letterstedt. He presented the land as a wedding present to his daughter Lydia Corrina. The Western Province Cricket Club leased the highly forested site in 1887 for 50 euros; in 1888, a 25-year-old lease was signed for 100 euros. A two-day match between Colonial Born and Mother Country served as the official opening. There was no scoreboard there, but a pond.

It is located at 146 Campground Rd, Newlands, Cape Town, 7780, South Africa.

Numerous alternations have been made to Newlands Cricket Ground (NGC) during the past century, including extensive renovations in the 1990s that increased the seating capacity to 25,000 spectators and included corporate boxes. The Western Province Cricket Association began a comprehensive makeover of the NGC in search of long-term revenue streams, and it was anticipated to be completed in 2017.

Furthermore, the stadium is getting a facelift of R800 million, producing the primary revenue from office spaces, shops, and restaurants. The major investor is Sanlam which is pumping above R400 million into this project. The office block development will produce a major share of revenue.

Architecture and Enclosures

NGC is a great example of sustainable design and is located in the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa. Location integration and roof design are key architectural elements of Newlands Cricket Stadium. One of the Newlands’s most striking features is how well it melds with its surroundings. The stadium’s layout makes the most of the surrounding natural beauty, including Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak. The stadium has been thoughtfully positioned by the architects to provide spectators with panoramic views of these famous sites from within, offering a memorable visual experience.

In addition, the roof design is a modern roof structure that not only protects spectators from adverse weather conditions but also provides sustainability. The overall design of the stadium is eco-friendly, which not only sets a good example for future games but also reduces the carbon footprint.

Newlands Cricket Grounds Architecture.

The master framework to increase the capacity from 7000 to 25,000 was finalized in 1990. The seats are within 100 meters from the pitch. Two distinct sectors were designed for seating; earth embankments and within building structures.

Oaks Pavilion

It is a five-story building, including a mall at the first level, common seating and debenture at the first and second levels, and suites at the last three levels.

North Stand

It is a four-story building with malls, public seating, and private suites. Firstly, at level one there is a continuation of the public mall and grounds-man facilities. After that, at the second level, private suites are constructed. Furthermore, at the third level, media facilities, and TV and radio coverage facilities are arranged. Lastly, at level four, a private club of 200 seating capacity is arranged.

Lastly, to give the appearance that they are smaller than they are, both structures rake backward from the field and on either side. At level three, a bridge connecting them provides architectural richness. Between the building structures and pitch are grass embankments and tiered open seatings.

Boundary Fencing

The ground is surrounded by a fence to provide security and to maintain the ground’s surface.

Pitch Report

The pitch assists the bowlers by providing the bounce to the ball. So, the pitch is quite different from that of Johannesburg Cricket Stadium. However, batsmen do not find it difficult to play here because the outfield is good and has a linear bounce. The pitch is more suitable for spinners.

Additionally, after winning the toss, every team wants to bat first at this venue because the pitch provides a turn in the second innings, which helps in taking the early wickets comfortably.

Boundary Length

The ground has a square perimeter that is 65 meters the shortest. The stadium’s straight perimeter measures 90 meters.

Stadium Dimensions

Although the exact measurements differ from match to match, the distance from the pitch’s Center to the boundary rope is 80 meters.

Weather Report

Cape Town has a rainfall climate and the temperature range varies from 14 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius. Overall, the weather most of the time does affect the game. The Newlands Cricket Ground gets 4 rainy days in the month from October to April.
