Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium

An Indian sports stadium named Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium is situated in Navrangpura, Ahmedabad, India. Also, Navrangpura Stadium refers to the Sports Club of Gujarat Stadium. The 1st ever ODI match held in India was played in this stadium but for now, this stadium is not used for international matches. In addition to that, Gujarat Cricket Team is the home team of the Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium.

The Vallabhbhai Cricket Stadium with a seating capacity of 50,000 established in 1960. For day and night matches, the cricket ground is well equipped with floodlights to make the games more enchanting. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is the owner of a ground located in the heart of India.

The cricket ground has Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation End & Azhar Altaf Pavilion End as the end names. The ground is under the operation of the Gujarat Cricket Association and is used to host some programs arranged in Gujarat state.

Moreover, to construct a grand cricket stadium and a Clubhouse, the Cricket Club of Ahmedabad (CCA) was given 67,000m2 or 80,000 yard2 in the year 1950. Later, the land and project were handed over to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and completed in 1960

In 2008, the stadium was renovated at the cost of ₹100 million for the Indian Cricket League (IPL). More than that, the renovation included an outfield, dressing rooms, ₹30-40 million for floodlights, and pitch improvement.

Architectural Information

Ahmadabad’s Cricket Stadium is a representation of the progressive ideals and experimental spirit of India. Mahendra Raj and renowned architect Charles Correa were architects of this cricket stadium in 1960.

In fact, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) announced plans to demolish Vallabhbhai Patel ground. In July 2020, the Getty Foundation announced funding for the stadium and soon after, the World Monuments Fund initiated a project for its preservation.

However, the Vallabhai stadium’s structure is known for its zigzag exterior wall, which serves as additional reinforcement. The stadium is completely silicon-painted to provide resistance to weather.
